Basin Harbor Club

Basin Harbor Club is an historic resort on Lake Champlain in Vergennes, Vermont.
The property includes a golf course with views of Lake Champlain. The surrounding natural wildlife will soon be part of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. Basin Harbor Club is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Basin Harbor's History

In 1882, Ardelia Beach, a Vergennes farmer's daughter, was far away from home teaching school in Iowa when the Basin Harbor farm came up for sale. She bought part of the property and returned home to operate her new farm. The beauty of the site prompted many "city folk" to ask about the possibility of staying at the farm as "summer boarders", a common practice in those days. By 1886, the hospitality aspects of the business far outweighed the farming parts, and the young resort began to grow, in part, no doubt, the result of Ardelia's excellent cooking skills.

IN 1909, Ardelia's nephew, Allen Penfield Beach joined the business and it was he who transformed the property into what it is today. His children Marjorie Beach Maloney, David Beach and Robert Beach, Sr., followed in the family tradition until 1990. Today, Robert Beach, Jr. and his sister, Pennie Beach, and Pennie's daughter, Sarah Morris, continue the 127-year tradition of the Beach Family at Basin Harbor as fourth and fifth generation hosts. Other involved family members include Pennie and Bob's father, Robert Beach, Sr., Pennie's husband, Peter Morris and their son Hasket, as well as Robert, Jr.'s wife, Wendy, and their daughter and son, Merle and Daniel.

The resort encompasses 700 acres with over a mile of Lake Champlain shoreline, 111 buildings including 8 meeting and banquet facilities, and some views. Amenities include three restaurants, an 18-hole golf course, five tennis courts, a swimming pool, a wellness center, a children's camp and playground, a private airfield, a low-elements adventure course, the waterfront area, annual gardens, the largest in Vermont, and the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. About 350 guests can be accommodated with roughly 325 staff members while the resort is open from mid-may to mid-October.
